Notice Board Updates – December 2020

How to play at LB&SC under Tier 2

All,

Please see below updated guidance on how we can play our chosen sports.

Badminton

  • Singles from any household, including one to one coaching.
  • Doubles can be played from one household or a household support bubble, versus another. You cannot mix households on the same side of the court.

Squash/Squash 57 (racketball)

  • Only household or household support bubbles can play traditional squash
  • Others can receive one to one coaching or
  • Play socially distanced squash i.e sides or drills. Socially distanced squash is only permitted within a squash bubble of six people. If you move from one bubble to another, you must take a break of seven days. Squash bubbles should be registered with Steve Bridgeman 07968 224505.
  • No more than two on court at any one time.

Table Tennis

  • Singles only. Only one table will be available and only two members can book a session i.e no groups.

Yoga

  • Yoga will recommence on December 11th.

We understand that playing your favourite sport under these restrictions is not practical for many of you and not enticing for others. However, we would try and encourage you to think about how you can get some exercise at the club as well as meet up with your colleagues.

Badminton

Think about

  • Coaching with one of our coaches.
  • Six members could book three courts for a session of singles. Please note that you cannot swap courts and play others, but you will need to rest at times and can chat with others as long as you are socially distanced.
  • You can arrange to have a hit with others without needing to get competitive. If you would like someone to hit with, the club can assist in finding another member to play against.
  • Singles can be played with a restricted part of the court i.e only the right or left side of the court or between the two service lines.
  • Drills.

Jonty Russ:                       07557 100843

Will Hilton Jackson:        07427 463333

Squash

Think about

  • Coaching
  • Solo practice
  • Doing drills with a partner. These can be competitive with a little bit of imagination: Assume A at the front and B at the back
    • A drives to length B drops. Can be done on both forehand and backhand. Swap over so A goes to the back etc
    • A drives to length and B boasts continue until one player makes a mistake. Swap over
    • A drops to himself then drives to length. B drives to length and the boasts etc. Swap over
    • Play front and back using the short line. Start as above with a drive to length and a boast and then A has to hit past the short line and B has to play short of it. Don’t forget you can use cross court drops and lobs. Swap over
    • Sides

LB&SC Tier 2 Opening

We can confirm that the Club will be re-opening to members on Thursday 3rd December for play.

Details of what form of play and how you can book a court is set out below. With regards all court bookings, we will be following the same procedure we operated under at weekends pre lockdown i.e. you can book a court as long as we can find a volunteer to open the club at that time, although we will strive to accommodate bookings as if the Club was operating traditional hours.

The situation will be kept under review and furloughed staff may be asked to return if demand is higher than anticipated.

Guidelines as to what activity is permitted for indoor sports have been taken from Badminton England and England Squash and are as follows:

BADMINTON-A-THON

The total cash collected from this event is £2.797. With Gift aid that sum will be pushing £3,000 and there’s still time to contribute to help us get over the line – just contact Annette in the office. Thank you to all who took part or contributed. Design details for the refurbishment of the changing rooms are being considered now, prior to obtaining quotes for the work to be carried out. LITTLEHAMPTON SPORTS AWARDS

News just in is that the Club has been nominated for Littlehampton Town Council’s Sports Team of the Year Award. The awards ceremony will be on 7th October. Good luck and best wishes to those who’ve represented the Club at the highest levels and gained this well deserved recognition.

AUGUST QUIZ NIGHT

It was a war fought with thought. Morphed heads in the picture-round inflicted some damage to a few scores, as did one particular question which required some mind-bending lateral thinking. In the end “The Mindsweepers” survived to clinch the £20 prize money with an impressive score of 86! “Phoenix” – bruised but unbowed – came second with an excellent 79, while “Nomads” got a little lost but still managed third place with a very respectable 75 – beat that if you can!

ON THE COMMITTEE

An enquiry from a member about the Club’s insurance cover was followed up and we’re pleased to be able to confirm that the arrangements in place include liabilities that might arise from anyone who visits/plays at the Club, whether they are a member or not. This insurance is not connected to any insurance arrangements effected by Badminton England nor by the Club’s affiliation.

Currently we are considering a number of initiatives to reduce our overhead costs and improve the Club’s core income by reviewing some long-standing arrangements.

Minutes of the 2019 AGM are now on the Club noticeboard.

JUNIOR COACHING

After a brief layoff Junior badminton coaching has re-commenced on Thursday evenings from 6.00pm to 7.00pm, and Junior squash coaching is expected to start again on 26 September, 5.15pm to 6.00pm, but would you be interested in more opportunities?

One possibility is to include squash, racketball and table tennis for juniors during the Thursday 6.00pm to 7.00pm session.

Another is to revive our Saturday morning sessions with badminton, squash, racketball and table tennis for Juniors from 10.00am to 12.00. This used to be a real occasion for families, with the bar open for refreshments and light snacks, and all sorts of games going on in the lounge.

Please let us have your comments and feedback to [email protected]

THE SOCIAL TEAM

The Social Team is made up of Committee members who are keen to make shared social activities available to all Club members. If there is an activity you would like to take part in, please drop a line to [email protected] and we’ll see what we can get started. Here’s your first opportunity:

TEAMS WANTED We are thinking of organising our very own darts teams and arranging some matches, but we need sociable people who make a point of hitting the right numbers on the board. If you are interested drop a line to the Social Team on [email protected], or contact Annette and maybe we can get something started.

SUPPORT THE CLUB

VOLUNTEERS WANTED

If you have a skill you could share with the Club, to help get us looking and feeling better, please let us know. You might be handyperson, you could be advising on anything from design of the decor to the decoration of the décor! We’d like to spruce things up and make everyone proud of what we provide for our members. Contact the Committee at [email protected].

KEEP IT CLEAN

It’s happened before and it’ll probably happen again – but players are wearing the wrong shoes on badminton and squash courts and leaving black marks. Please make sure you’re not a culprit by wearing trainers with non-marking soles. Thankyou.

ON THE COMMITTEE

Another marathon Committee Meeting this month as members continued getting to grips with what’s going to be a very busy year. It takes time to settle into new roles but so far we’ve delivered on the commitment made at the AGM, to keep you better informed, and this first issue of The Noticeboard continues that process. Watch out for regular editions with more news about all that’s happening – we think you’ll be surprised. It’s said you can’t please all the people all the time and we’re certainly aware of that, but going by your response to this Committee’s efforts so far, most of you understand what we’re trying to do and are happy that we’re doing our best to deliver the improvements we’d all like to see at the Club. Thank you for your patience. We’ll be in touch soon to ask for your opinion about different aspects of the Club but for now, if you have any comments or suggestions, please contact me at [email protected]
Best wishes, Richard Jones – Chair
